Gold dust from California? Yes!
Gloria is probably the only gift retailer in the United States who can really claim that the building they own and operate was originally paid for with gold dust brought from California in a chamois money belt by Levi Thorp after the Gold Rush of 1849.
Built by Levi Thorp in 1871, Cupola House stands as a National Historic Landmark building in the heart of Egg Harbor.
As you enter, a country fragrance delights your senses. You will find special treasures throughout the 10 rooms that are open to the public – each restored to maintain the gothic Revival style of the mansion. We spent the better part of an hour with Gloria Hansen touring this unique shop, though we have already been very pleased customers many, many times.
This shop is filled with collectibles, antique display cabinets, fine art and estate jewelry and other fine jewelry. Every square inch is a new discovery and delight as you meander through this gorgeous home, with items artfully displayed throughout this unique home.
Original watercolor and oil paintings, Limited edition prints, stone lithographs, etchings and more by such renowned artists as Charles Vickery and Arthur Hopper cover every wall and an occasional easel. Even the stairway walls are lined with fine art.
Famous lines of handbags and luggage bags from Vera Bradley, collectibles from Department 56, Harbor Lights (a tremendous collection of Lighthouses), Harmony Kingdom, Byer’s Choice Christmas carolers and others occupy shelves, hooks and cabinets throughout the shop.
Stunning stained glass panels, lamps and mid-century and Venetian art glass sparkle in windows, on tabletops and in glass display cabinets. Unique pottery from Germany, employing antique patterns, is a delight to view (and buy!) and the keen eye of Gloria for finding the unique and unusual.
Handmade glass items, distinctive china and pottery items from Blue Onion,. Vera Bradley and others, Merritt International acrylic and plastic tableware, Glass Eye Studio(tm) glass eggs and paperweights - which are all stunning - and lots more.
And there are books, things to delight children, wonderful floral arrangements, country wreaths, table lamps of brass and other home table accessories greet you in each room. Old World Christmas ornaments, Amish quilts, fiber art, clothing, cards, candlesticks, scented candles and lotions round out the offerings.
You just cannot imagine the tremendous selection and sheer number of beautiful items that adorn this elegant shop. Original art and quality reproductions by artists like Charles Vickery, Ed Herbeck, Silvano, Stacey Small and others. We have purchased many items, including art pieces here, and have always been pleased with the selection and quality and service at Cupola House. In downtown Egg Harbor, you cannot miss this magnificent building and the collection and treasures that it houses!
You can spend an hour or two in this shop - there is that much to admire. If you walk through here and don't find something you absolutely adore, we will be shocked. It's that good a shop! And if you want to take a break, head out back, grab something at the Cupola Deli, sit outside and enjoy!
This is a must stop shop on your trip to Door County for the history of it and for the art and wonderful section of treasures. Definitely visit their website for more information, at the Cupola House. And please tell them you saw them on DoorCountyNavigator.com!
