The Door County Peninsula offers natural beauty from bluffs to 250 miles of coastline and rare species of flowers, wetlands and so many more hidden gems. But how can you find all of these wonderful places in Door County? Well, read on, because Door County Living Classrooms will take you on a personalized trip through the natural wonders of the Peninsula! They are the only “eco-tour” we know of in Door County, so read on! This is not just a walk in the woods!
We spoke with Jaime, who along with her husband, founded the company. They have 10 – 12 years of experience and hold degrees biology and environmental science, and geology respectively. You are in knowledgeable and experienced hands. They even make historical references to these sites as well, so you get a feel for the history of the area.
People come to Door County because it is a special place – for nature, scenic value, and beauty. Well, Door County Living Classrooms will take you to places that you will not find on your own. They have private access arrangements with certain people and organizations, and know where the protected and private habitats are that are the home to rare and endangered species, and more. It is a fun and educational experience that is enjoyed by everyone – and kids love it! It’s hands-on and interactive! But Door County Living Classrooms will tell you about “environmental ethics” – don’t endanger any of the endangered species!
On average, you are out in nature for 2 – 3 hours.
Two Ways to Go!
One – By Land: You can take to the land or take to the water! Your choice – whatever meets your interest the most. Either way, you will see the great outdoors of Door County - you can hike through wetlands, ridges and upland forests, see unique flora and habitat types, and see things you may have never seen before and like you can never see on your own. The upland forests offer great wildflowers, columbine, trilliums, sugar maples and beech trees. And it changes with the seasons – so take a hike! The wetlands, formed by glacial movement ages ago, offer more state and federal endangered species of flowers and other unique species of plants and birds than anywhere else in the state of Wisconsin.
Choose a tour incorporating scenic overlooks, especially on the bay side – where you will see natural rock formations, bluffs, waves crashing in to the steep, rocky shores and more. Or even take a “twilight” hike.
Two: By Sea – well, Lake, or river: Take to the water, and kayak or canoe through the many bays, inlets or inland lakes – no previous experience needed, and Door County Living Classrooms will make all the equipment arrangements. They will even get you an intro to water safety, paddling and whatever you need. Door County from the water is spectacular – whether on an inland lake, the Mink River, or from one of its many bays it is something to behold.
Combination: Water and Land – The Most Popular!
You can take a combination tour, perhaps canoe or kayak for 45 minutes, hike for some time and then canoe or kayak back. This way you get to experience Door County from many unique perspectives.
What an opportunity for a unique excursion into Door County.
Usually taking groups from 2 – 8 people, Door County Living Classrooms also offers custom tours, and tours that can accommodate large tours or classes. All you have to do is ask and they will put something together for you! They cover the entire Peninsula – all the way to Washington Island and even rock island if you are interested! And they are reasonably priced as well.
Winter Activities Too!
Open year round, Door County Living Classrooms offer winter activities as well. For example, you can take a 2 day snowshoe tying class – actually make your own snowshoes! They also offer a workshop on how to get the most out of your digital camera, and will be adding additional winter activities as well. So check back with them often.
This is a unique opportunity to spend some high-quality time discovering the true nature of Door County.
