Food/Dining : Jacksonport Mr.
G's Supper Club
On Hwy 57, on the "quiet side," Mr. G's is off the beaten path. But definitely worth finding. We walked in and sat at the bar, which greets you as you enter. The wood-paneled dining room is off to the right. We sat at the bar and chatted with Patty, the bar manager, who, when she goes out to eat with her husband comes to Mr. G's! We chatted with another couple at the bar, George and Margaret, who have been coming to Mr. G's for years, and love it every time. Margaret recommended the ribs, and said Della makes the best ribs in Door County. We asked if Della worked here! Well, of course, she does! Now we were ready to dine and see what all the fuss was about! So, off we went. I ordered the ribs, and our other reviewer ordered the queen cut prime rib. The hugest slab of ribs I have ever seen shows up, dominating the plate (really, they were a foot-long). I tested their tenderness with my fork, and to my delight, the meat just fell off the bone - extremely tender. The sauce was very tasty, and mild (so if you're a hot and spicy sauce person, you may have to add something to it). Very flavorful. The queen cut of prime rib was also very juicy, tender and flavorful. Truly a delight. Our prime rib tester, in from Colorado where they breath prime rib, said it was terrific. Salads were a nice size, with zingy raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Bonnie, our waitperson, was awesome and friendly. We met with Mr. And Mrs. G after we dined, and told them we were reviewing their place and liked it! Mr. G (Bobbie Geitner) and Mrs. G (Mary) were a delight to talk with - super nice people, which is probably one of the reasons that the staff, on average, have been with them for 15 years of the 20 that they have been opened! And it shows. We also met Della who made the ribs - I personally thanked her for a great dinner. Dinners range from about $10.25 to about $19.95, but always check with them for current pricing. Dinners come with a salad or home made soup, potato, rice or pasta, relishes and fresh baked rolls. You can get dinners "From the Land," like filet mignon, New York strip, rib-eye, prime rib (yes!), BBQ ribs (yes!), pork chops, grilled chicken breast, broasted chicken, Chicken Alfredo, Chicken Milano, and a Vegetable Medley. "From the Lakes and Seas" you can order up broiled whitefish, sautéed scallops, deep-fried scallops, lobster tail, Neptune's Delight (a selection of boiled shrimp, stuffed shrimp and 4 oz. lobster tail), lobster tail (at market price), Shrimp Scampi, a seafood combo plate, perch and boiled salmon. There are "Light Eaters Entrees" as well as a children's menu, including chicken nuggets, pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs. They have a special menu on Friday nights, focused a lot on fish. Our
experience is when the owners of a restaurant or inn are actively involved,
and are working on sight every day, the quality shows through. Bobbie
and Mary have done a wonderful job here, and serve up wonderful food,
served by a staff enthused to be there! |
