Food/Dining : Sister Bay

Alexander's
3667 Hwy 42
Fish Creek
920-868-3532

Well - fine dining is truly on the menu at Alexander's in Fish Creek!  As you know, in 2006, Alexander's moved from Sister Bay (Hotel du Nord) to Fish Creek.  The new place is spectacular, as they have redesigned the entire interior, closed in the porch area for more elegant dining, and developed a pleasing color scheme that compliments fine dining that they are already known for.

We met with master chef and owner, Bruce Alexander, and discussed his restaurant, which has become one of the fine-dining places to be in Door County! He was gracious in conversation, as was his wife and partner, Jill. This new location is going to be terrific - from a great kitchen to a wonderful bar area and dining rooms.

The sage-colored walls in the main dining room, accented by tasteful artwork and unique ceiling light fixtures and sconces, really add to the atmosphere. Accent hints of plum coordinate nicely to provide a wonderful dining environment. Still a casual, comfortable, unpretentious place, the menu offers a wide variety that will meet any party’s needs.

Waiting in the bar are now is a total pleasure.  The bar is beautiful, and you can enjoy a nice glass of wine while waiting for your table.  In fact, we’d encourage you to get there early so you can do just that.  We enjoyed our wine and chatted with the bartender and other patrons for a bit. Alexander's has a very nice wine selection, so we enjoyed some nice cabernet.   You will find the perfect wine to complement your dinner.

The Dinner
We have dined at Alexander’s many times, and have always enjoyed it.  The appetizer selection is wonderful.  For example, we enjoyed a baked Brie wrapped in a pastry shell, served with lingonberries, fresh fruit in season and French bread.  Wonderful!   We also ordered Shrimp Tempura and Wild Escargot for appetizers. The shrimp tempura was just right, and served with a sweet hot mustard sauce which was out of this world! The wild escargot was served out of the shell, with shiitake, portabella and white button mushrooms, sautéed with butter, garlic and white wine. Just right - not overpowering, not over spiced! Presentation was excellent and inviting.  Lots to choose from on the appetizer menu – so make sure you sample some!

Other appetizers include king crab cakes, crostini bread, and baked artichoke gorgonzola.  Soups and salads are also available.

The dinner prices range from $18.00 - $29.00, with nightly specials, and Friday Night Fish Specials as well. All entrees include a choice of soup, house salad or small Caesar, Chef’s choice of starch and vegetable of the day, along with warm bread and butter.  I had a house salad, which I had with roasted garlic vinaigrette dressing (fabulous!), over mixed greens and vegetables in season!  A very complete, flavorful salad! Check out their complete menu (selections and prices may vary).

For main entrees, we ordered a Cherry Barbequed Salmon, and a French Cut Pork Chop au Poivre. We love salmon, and this was a unique offering – brushed with olive oil, then charbroiled and basted with a Door County Cherry Vinaigrette sauce!   The salmon sat atop a pile of grilled asparagus – delightful with a glass of pinot noir.  Ahh!

The bone-in pork chop was equally good, brushed with olive oil and herbs, charbroiled and finished with a peppercorn Bordelaise sauce.  Great presentation and great food.  The Pinot Noir went well with this entrée as well.

You will find a huge selection on the Chop House page of the menu from filets to veal Marsala, and the seafood entrees include cold water Australian lobster tail, sesame tuna, scallops and more.

Poultry entrees offered include roasted cherry duck, a Chicken Alexander, breaded with hazelnuts breading, and Chicken Sophia, which is sautéed and topped with prosciutto and Italian cheese.

The nightly specials, one every night and the Friday fish specials, offer more selection, and a special price.

And there are pasta and vegetarian dishes as well.  Shrimp and Scallop Chiopino on egg fettuccine, grilled chicken Asiago ravioli or a wild mushroom ravioli and more.

Dessert offerings may vary, but once when we dined, we were so full, that we forced ourselves to split a White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake - the piece was absolutely huge - so huge that when after we split it, it looked liked like 2 full pieces! Again, presentation was excellent, with drizzled raspberry sauced around the plate.. We had regular coffee with the dessert.
Our service was so excellent that we left a 20+% tip – we were very happy.

We Shall Return . . .and have!
We have been back to Alexander's several times more and have always been pleased. And we will return again. . .

And Alexander’s caters for weddings and banquets.  So call!
You will more than likely need reservations if you intend to dine on the weekend. We were there about 9PM on a Friday night and were able to get right in, but you might want to call ahead. My family tried to dine there on a Saturday and could not get in - we had no reservations. So plan on it!
If you would like one fine-dining experience in Door County for a special night, get to Alexander's - we think you will agree!  And please tell them that DoorCountyNavigator.com sent you!  You can print out this review and hand it to them!
