Food/Dining : Fish Creek Stillwaters This outdoor dining establishment in Fish Creek is a one of a kind around here. On the corner, right off the main road Highway 42, this once-gas station in the old days is now a quick food place for dining al fresco. With about 7 outdoor tables, 4 of which are covered under a portico, a couple more with umbrellas, this is a cozy little spot surrounded by white picket fences and landscaped flowers, and calls itself a Chicago-style hot-dog stand. You can get Chicago-style hot dogs, an Italian beef or beef and sausage combo, pizzas with fresh homemade crusts, hamburgers, veggie burgers, grilled chicken, and specials that sometimes include things like a whitefish reuben, or a Door County whitefish sandwich. Standard side fare like chips, sodas, lemonade are available, as well as custard, malts and shakes, and real fruit smoothies. On a pleasant July evening we gave it a try and ordered up one Italian beef and sausage combo, with sweet peppers. The sandwich was packed with food – I had to eat most of it with a fork. Both the beef and the sausage were on the mild side, and so you lost some of those Italian beef spices you find in Italian beef sandwiches in an old Italian neighborhood. But overall, I’d give it a 7 to a 7.5 (out of 10) for quantity and taste. I’m not writing home about this one, but I am more than willing to return and try additional items on the menu. This sandwich was not over the top, but it was good. This was only one small test, and there are plenty of items on the menu to try. So we will be back again for more testing. In the meantime, if you are in Fish Creek walking around, want something relatively fast and with decent quality, stop on in. It’s always nice to sit outside too on a pleasant summer day. |
