Food/Dining : Sturgeon Bay

Stone Harbor Restaurant & Pub
Stone Harbor Resort
107 North First Ave.
Sturgeon Bay

Stone Harbor

At Stone Harbor Resort, Stone Harbor Restaurant & Pub is a first class culinary experience. Walk in to a large dining room, in deep beige, with high ceilings and huge paned windows and transoms that look out directly onto the waters of Sturgeon Bay and to the Old Bridge. The restaurant is part of the very nice Stone Harbor Resort and Conference Center.

The dining room area seats about 68, and is decorated with paintings and prints on the wall space that is available (lots of windows here). The overall feeling is one of class, but when the tables are full, there is a distinct din to the dining. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, it is a full service comfortable and casual restaurant. Our crew dined in for dinner.

The Dinner Menu

A nice selection of both appetizers and entrees offer something for just about every taste. The appetizers include such delights as Artichoke and Havarti Dip, Smoked Whitefish Cakes with Door County Whitefish with specialty herbs and creamy horseradish, Stone Harbor Escargot, Gulf Shrimp and more.

"Soups and Salads"range from Baked Four Onion soup, to Caesar, Garden Harvest, Coriander Lime or Balsamic Gorgonzola salads.

The entrees, all served with fresh baked bread, a house salad, vegetable of the day, and a choice of potato or grain, are complete and, as a guide, are priced between $17 and $28 -always check with the restaurant for current pricing information.

A Prime Rib, slowly roasted for 6 hours according to the menu, is available in 8, 10 or 16 ounces. Glazed Veal Tenderloin, grilled and interestingly prepared with a Wisconsin Root Beer and orange glaze, and topped with ginger mango chutney sounded appealing!

Ostrich Loin, Camembert Chicken, Stone Harbor Sirloin, Blackened Ahi, Anise Herb Pork, and other choices rounded out the dinner offerings. All looked like they had an interesting twist in the preparation.

A children's menu is also available with things like a personal pizza, kid's size, hamburgers, grilled cheese and chicken tenders.

What We Ordered!

Our six diners gave the menu a nice workout. For all, the visual presentation of the dishes was just excellent, offering a very tempting view of the entrees when placed in front of you.

We started with an excellent appetizer, the Artichoke & Havarti Dip, which was creamy, flavorful and served with crustini (a cracker of sorts). We loved it! Recommended! The salads were standard house salads with mixed greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, croutons and onions. The peppercorn dressing was wonderful.

The Filet Mignon, a large piece of beef tenderloin topped with a Gorgonzola cheese, caramelized shallots, panchetta relish, and finished off with a peppercorn brandy sauce was tender and delicious. The Gorgonzola cheese sauce was a bit heavy, but easily removed to taste. Served with mashed potatoes and mini-squash, the dinner was a delight.

The Stone Harbor Sirloin was a huge 16-ounce piece of juicy prime, char-grilled to "medium"as ordered. This flavorful and satisfying dish was topped with wild mushrooms and served also with peas-in-the-pod, mini-squash (excellent) and mashed potatoes. Thumbs up on this one!

The sauce on the Bourbon Baked Scallops brought a flavor burst of Kentucky Bourbon and Door County maple syrup -an excellent and creative combination. Mashed also came with this entrée, which would be re-ordered in a heartbeat!

Two of our reviewers ordered the Blackened Ahi Tuna (they couldn't resist)! While both ordered the dish "medium", one was delivered "medium"while one was on the "well"side. Large portions of the tuna offered plenty of flavor and plenty to eat. Both liked the tuna quite a bit, but both were served with whipped sweet potatoes -and both our diners thought that this was indeed an odd combination of flavors. The potatoes were very sweet, while the Ahi was spiced and blackened. Our diners thought that perhaps a rice dish might make a better mate to the Ahi.

Our child diner ordered the pizza, and was happy with it as it was topped with a couple of cheeses.

Desert offering included a carrot cake with chocolate sauce, an orange rum cake, a Louisiana Bourbon pecan pie, and more. Being quite satisfied from a filling meal, only one piece of carrot cake was ordered, and one 4-berry pie. The carrot cakes arrived with hazelnuts and almonds, and a lot of chocolate sauce more than drizzled upon the plate. The 4-Berry Pie taster claimed it was "berry good!"

Service in general was very good, though one coffee ordered, got overlooked. Not a big deal. A very nice wine list, beer and a full bar are offered.

The Breakfast menu included omelets, Door County pancakes, old-fashioned oat meal and more. Lunch also looked interesting, with lots of salads like a Texan BBQ Salad, and Asiago and Roasted Garlic Ravioli, and interesting sandwiches like Grilled Ahi Tuna, Maple Glazed Salmon, First Avenue Burgers and more.

We all enjoyed dining at Stone Harbor Restaurant & Pub at Stone Harbor Resort and would come back here often! We recommend that you take a ride and dine here -we think you will like it.
