restaurant Sage in Door CountyRestaurant Sage
136 North Third Avenue
Sturgeon Bay, WI

Sage is fine-dining. Located on Third street in downtown Sturgeon Bay, this restaurant is a must stop for fine dining while in Door County. It is decorated with an art deco flair and has many small candles burning throughout the medium size dining area. Upon entering, there is a wine bar with a wide variety of wines for sale by the glass or by the bottle. The white tablecloths give the dining area a formal look but the casual dress of the patrons allows for a comfortable feel, a very nice blend. The menu is eclectic, with entrees ranging from Caribbean Bouillabaisse to a grilled beef filet with a bleu cheese and shiitake mushroom sauce. There are also fish, pasta, veal and lamb dishes, each prepared in a special way. Entrees range in price from $19 to $28, appetizers from $6 to $9 and soups and salads from $4 to $5. The wine list has something on it to please most people.

Our party of two started with Snow Crab cakes with chipotle aioli, which were lightly breaded and fried – and delicious! The Crab tasted fresh and the chipotle aioli was a nice and spicy change from heavier sauces that sometime accompany this dish. We both had the Spring Green salad, which was a nice mix of fresh cold greens topped with crumbled feta cheese and a tasty Italian vinaigrette. For the entrée, I chose the Mediterranean Grouper that was pan-seared and served on a bed of eggplant, with a nice side portion of couscous. I am a Grouper fan - and it did not disappoint. Lightly breaded in garlic breadcrumbs, this was a recipe I wish other restaurants we frequent would use! My wife chose the Asparagus, Portobella and Gorgonzola Pasta, which was farfalle pasta tossed with shallots, mushrooms and cheese. I had a taste and we both really liked it! For dessert, we shared a piece of flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce and cappuccino. The service was fast and friendly and our server, Jenelle, had a good knowledge of wines and the menu.

We’ve eaten in many fine-dining restaurants in big cities and small and we felt that Sage was as good as any one that we’ve ever eaten in. Jenelle even brought in fresh oregano from her garden for garnish. I don’t think they do that in New York City…

Got to Sturgeon Bay and try Sage! We think you will enjoy this fine-dining experience!
