The Baileys Harbor Yacht Club Resort (BHYC) is located on the North end of Baileys Harbor, bordering the northern area of the Ridges Sanctuary, which is a world-renowned nature preserve. BHYC is literally surrounded by miles of dense woodlands and wild life, making it a nature lover’s paradise. Quietly tucked away in a wooded setting on the shores of Lake Michigan, BHYC offers one and two bedroom suites with views of green forests, a tranquil harbor and a panoramic picture of the village of Baileys Harbor.

We visited many of the suites and staterooms in the four different lodges on this beautiful property. The different buildings include the Main lodge, Christianne lodge, Brighton lodge and my favorite, the Adrianna lodge. All the suites and staterooms are nicely appointed, have lots of room, include patios or balconies and have beautiful cherry wood trim. Suites have fully equipped kitchens including dishwashers, whirlpool baths and fireplaces. Staterooms are designed with an open concept and have coffee makers, microwaves, small refrigerators and some have small stovetops. Many of the rooms have panoramic views of the harbor and coastline.

As you walk through the doors of the Main lodge, you enter enormous room, which nonetheless inspires a warmth and coziness traditionally found in smaller settings. To your right, you will find the check-in counter and to the left is a wonderful area featuring a stone fireplace. Situated in front of the fireplace is a nice conversation grouping including a couch, loveseat, two chairs and coffee table ú you can just see yourself sitting there chatting with friends and family. On either side of the fireplace are nice conversation tables with games.

Coffee and tea are available everyday, anytime! In the winter they put on a continental breakfast. And BHYC runs many specials in the wintertime so be sure to check their site for more information when the time is right! Also check out there apparel on display and for sale in the lobby, really cool stuff! There is a staircase that leads to a balcony that overlooks the lobby and also the pool located on the first floor just past the check in counter.

The pool area has lots of space and is highlighted by knotty pine cathedral ceilings. Six skylights help bring the outdoors in, and on a wall facing the Christianne lodge there are ten windows looking out over a patio. Plenty of chairs and tables surround the pool and large hot tub, which can accommodate about ten people. There is also a rinsing shower and sauna.

The Rooms and Suites

You will find every room at BHYC to be very clean and very well maintained. Each lodge is connected by lighted walkways flanked by perennials and flowerpots, making an evening stroll even nicer. The lawns and surrounding landscape are very peaceful, and abundant with the sounds of wildlife. We saw rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks and a variety of birds as we walked from lodge to lodge.

All the rooms were very nice and we really liked the honeymoon suite (room 312) in the Brighton lodge. It features a massive four post king-size bed, lots of closet and dresser space and loads of warmth and character. The master bathroom has a two-sink vanity with large mirror, double whirlpool bath and a fantastic shower area with two showerheads. The living room has a two-sided fireplace that you can also enjoy from the master bedroom. A really neat writing desk with swivel rocker chair sits in front of a window overlooking the patio and water. The burgundies and dark greens really enhanced the ambiance of the suite. This is a great suite for just about anyone.

We noted that all patio and balconies are covered, making them easy to enjoy no mater what the weather.

A review of the BHYC would not be complete without mentioning the Adriana lodge. The lodge itself is set off in a more abundantly wooded area giving it a very private and secluded presence. As you walk in, a balcony and a front lobby greet you with a two and a half story ceiling with wonderful stenciling, and windows on the front wall. Under the balcony is the staircase leading to the second floor rooms. At the left and right are large arched doorways leading to the first floor rooms.

We really enjoyed suite 403. These suites have wonderful floor plans that include a breakfast nook and a covered screen porch out back. The furniture is very warm and cozy, and the décor is somewhat country with wrought iron lamps and distressed end tables, nightstands and mirrors. Words to describe this suite: soft, comfy, quiet, private, cozy, relaxing. If you visit BHYC, consider the suites in the Adriana lodge if you’re looking for the peaceful serenity of nature.

No matter what, you’ll enjoy all the rooms at the Baileys Harbor Yacht Club Resort.
