Places to Stay : New Yardley Inn

New Yardley Inn
3360 County E
Baileys Harbor
920-839-9487

The New Yardley Inn is in fact relatively new - construction began in September of 1997 and the inn opened in may of 1998. We met with Suzanne and Dillon, the owners of the inn, and took a tour of their wonderfully unique inn

Why the name, "New Yardley Inn?"Well, Suzanne grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania that's been around since the 1600's, was married there and has lots of great memories. The town? Yardley - and there was a Yardley Inn in Yardley! And so she brought the memories of her hometown to Baileys Harbor (literally) as The New Yardley Inn -whose story is told through the wonderful artwork, family heirlooms and home touches that adorn every room of the inn

You enter the inn and really feel like you are entering someone's home. The inn, which is situated on 10 acres of land, is tucked away in a quiet part of Door County - away from the crowds and main sections of town. This is an inn for those who seek a quiet respite, with acres to look at out of your B&B room window. Full of pines, the 10 acres provide true country quiet

The entry hall is lined with intricate nautical etchings by Lionel Barrymore, pen and ink drawings, and other pleasing pieces that echo life on the east coast (Gloucester) and open, free space.

When we say Suzanne has literally brought her hometown memories with her, we really mean it. The inn is full of her family heirlooms, as one corner cupboard in the entry hall testifies to (see photo). Her grandfather's lighter, and her father's violin which has a place of honor on a dining room wall, and his treasured "grandmother's" clock (some classify it as a "miniature tall case") and dozens of other mementos that work very well at defining a sense of home for all who stay here -all grace the inn throughout

The dining room is where the breakfasts are served (or on the East-facing porch). And the full breakfasts include fresh fruit, a main course like the house specialty baked French toast with apples and cinnamon on top, or the equally popular chili-cheese egg puffs (with green chilies) served with salsa and sour cream. Dillon's mom's blueberry muffin recipe provides the base for scrumptious muffins. Granolas, juice, coffee and teas round out the fare.

The sitting room, where guests can relax and chat or read, has a floral loveseat and comfy chair, a nice striped chair, and a unique fireplace, whose metal around the glass doors are gold -Dillon thought they were brass and was pleasantly surprised. The marble surround is from Marshall Field's State Street Store from Chicago when Fields had made some renovations a while back). Truly different.

THE ROOMS

This three-room inn offers a wheelchair accessible room, The Chart Suite that can be entered on the ground floor outside. The Chart Suite offers a king bed in the bedroom side, with a stenciled border of lighthouses, and a sitting room that sports a trundle bed and a firebox fireplace. The very nice sized bath has a double whirlpool, and floral wallpapers making it a functional and well-appointed bath. Double French doors separate the bedroom from the sitting area, while antique maps and small watercolors complete the theme. And to top it all, this suite has a private exterior porch for sitting and relaxing. Very nice suite -we liked it

Upstairs, you will find The Williamsburg Room, named after Williamsburg Virginia, is adorned with 5 etchings that were commissioned by the city of Williamsburg VA in the 1930's. Very nice touch. Stenciled tulips in reds and mauve, a real "federal"feel to the room with a 4-poster "rice bed"and a warm carpet finish off this very lovely offering

The Philadelphia Room, also upstairs, has its walls decorated with a "Shaker Tree of Life"stencil border along the wall near the ceiling, and art work by prominent Philadelphia artists. Blues and whites create a cozy feel, while the sitting area by the fireplace offers more comfort.

Suzanne's mother was a terrific artist, and her works grace many of the walls throughout the inn.

We really liked the many personal touches throughout the inn, which we think translate to a comfortable feeling for all who seek a truly homey feel to an inn. Dillon and Suzanne were a delight, and have dozens of interesting stories they can tell you about the art and memories that grace this inn in a very nice way. Try the New Yardley Inn, and tell them you found them on DoorCountyNavigator.com please!
