Places to Stay : Egg Harbor Door County Bluff House Staying in the Door County Bluff House is kind of like staying in a four-star hotel with a million dollar view and turkeys and deer on the property. The 3,400 square foot house, completed in November 2004, sits on Monument Bluff Pass, a quiet gravel road in Egg Harbor. With a cedar shake and stone façade, the home seems to be in harmony with the woods and natural surroundings. “We are on top of the trees. This is a million dollar view,” says Robert Tolomeo who owns the home with his wife, Kelly, and a third partner.
Flooring and trim throughout the home are made from locally milled plantation pine, custom crafted by Leo Merriman of the M & W Saw Mill. “The home has an earthy feel. Iron, stone, metal, wood are the basic theme of the house,” Kelly explains. There is a television with Direct TV, VCR and DVD here and televisions in the four bedrooms as well. Recessed lighting gives the family room a nice ambiance at night.
There are four bedrooms here--two of them are master suites with private baths. Two bedrooms on the second floor share a bath, and there’s a powder room on the first floor. The home’s set up—with one master suite on the lower level and another on the opposite side of the house on the second level—is perfect for two vacationing couples and their families. The owners seemed to have thought of everything, installing two separate air conditioning systems--one for each side of the house.
“This bath was inspired by the J.W. Marriott in Las Vegas,” Kelly says. “They have the rain shower there. It’s just a different feel, how the water comes on you.” All linens—towels, sheets—are provided. Hair blow dryers are stored in bath vanities. Head up the staircase—be sure to check out the view from way up here! A beautiful 22-foot long pine bridge, embellished with wrought iron, stretches across the family room. On one side is the second master suite. It has a queen-size bed and a stunning view of Green Bay waters. The adjoining bath, with tub and shower, has a double vanity sink. Walk the bridge over to the opposite side and find two more bedrooms. One has a queen-size bed, and the other has two twin-size beds. In addition to the natural feel of the woodwork, the home’s walls are painted in a handsome camel color. Bedding and wall art instill bright colors into the room. Even with such a fabulous interior, an outdoor deck will beckon you to spend time there. It’s 36 feet long by 12 feet wide. Have a seat on one of the Adirondack chairs or around the picnic table—they are made from pine by a Door County woodworker. Take in a gorgeous sunset, listen to the birds or fire up the gas grill. Our only recommendation to the homeowners was to screen in an area of the deck or add a screened porch. The home is located just minutes from Egg Harbor’s shopping area and unique Carlsville businesses offering up locally made coffee, wine, candles and ice cream. You can also head east on Cty. Rd. I to Hwy. 57. From there, it’s just a short drive south to Cty. Rd. WD and the hiking trails and swimming at White Fish Dunes State Park in Sturgeon Bay. Upon your return to the Door County Bluff House, you may want to gaze at the stars and get a closer view of Michigan through the home’s telescope. “I’ve seen shooting stars. It is just so peaceful here,” Robert says. “No one comes through here—just the birds. It’s a quiet and relaxing place.” We think you will find this home a delight!
