Location/Checking
in
The
Cookery's Lodging are located on the Cookery restaurant property. They are
discreetly situated next door and north of the restaurant.
Take Hwy. 42 north to Fish Creek and turn right at
the stop sign (near the Noble House Museum). The Cookery is two blocks ahead on
your right at 4135 Main St./Hwy. 42.
You can park your car in front of the restaurant,
and check in at the restaurant. Parking for The
Cookery's Lodging guests is actually available off the street and next to the units. In fact,
another way to enterThe
Cookery's Lodging is off Bluff St.
The
Hanson Suite and the Hanson Cottage
The Hanson Suite and the Hanson Cottage are named
for the Hanson family. They were prior owners of the property, which was
acquired in the early eighties by Carol and Dick Skare, who established the
Cookery back in 1977.
The Hanson Suite is the
largest of the two offerings, and the Hanson Cottage, while more intimate, is
charming and a nice value. Both
accommodations offer fully equipped kitchens (including coffeemaker, dishes, and
utensils), a gas grill, heating and air conditioning, TV/cable, DVD, VCR. Bed linens are provided, but guests are
asked to bring towels.
The Hanson Suite is located in a building next door
to the Cookery (above TR Pottery). It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. But the real attraction is the
view of Green Bay waters from the large combined living and dining room, as
well as from the spacious side and front decks.
And what we liked is the fact that you can enjoy
this view in this private suite/building without feeling like you are in a
large hotel with a lot of other people on their decks. This is a popular spot in Fish Creek,
so keep in mind that passerbys may be part of your vista. As Courtney Holdmann Skare, general
manager of the Cookery says, “Fish Creek is busy, but it’s not big city
busy. The main asset here is the
view.”
Other pluses about the Hanson Suite are its recent
remodeling of the two bathrooms and the kitchen (new countertops, new white
appliances, repainting). You walk
right into the kitchen, which makes it very convenient for bringing in
groceries and items needed for your vacation time.
The kitchen flows into the dining room, where there
are table and chairs for family dining. The living area has a sofa and loveseat
along with a TV/cable, DVD/VCR.
The bedrooms are quietly situated in the rear of
the suite. One bedroom is outfitted with two full beds, and it may make a nice
choice for two children traveling with parents. The other bedroom has a queen-size bed and a sitting
area furnished with white wicker pieces.
The recently remodeled bathrooms in the Hanson
Suite have a tub/shower new lighting, vanity and more. They are white and
bright. The Hanson Suite sleeps up
to six people.
“We get couples who come up and will stay in the
Hanson Suite together, or a family with kids will stay here,” Courtney says of
her past guests.
Meanwhile, the Hanson Cottage is a lovely choice
for a couple, a single traveler or seniors who do prefer not to deal with
stairs. You walk right onto the deck of this unit—no stairs into the
entry. We liked the privacy
fencing and outdoor table and chairs near the door and grill.
The Hanson Cottage was
remodeled for the 2009 season: The walls were replastered and painted, new
carpeting was installed as well as new interior doors. The bath was remodeled,
as well. As part of the remodel,
the ceiling was raised, giving the living area a more spacious feeling. The vintage
windows—charming and quite functional--remain.
The living/dining area furnishings include a sofa
and a round table that seats four. The galley style kitchen is fully equipped
and all you really need for a vacation.
Even the bathroom has a window. Also, the vanity
has a granite top, and there’s a shower/tub combination.
The
Cookery restaurant—your neighbor
And don’t forget the
Cookery is right next door. This restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily,
brunch on Saturday and Sunday and has a lovely waterview wine bar on the upper
level.
The
Cookery was rebuilt and completed in May 2009 after a devastating fire in
2008. The owners incorporate local fresh ingredients in the menu items. Included are Door County cherries,
white fish from Gills Rock, meat from Ottos in Kewaunee County and wheat from
Washington Island, as well as abundant locally grown produce items.
Some of the favorite menu choices include the Door
County cherry and apple salad and chicken salad sandwich. Entrees include white
fish, steaks, lamp chops, vegetarian options and much more.
“The philosophy of the Cookery has always been to
provide good tasting food that’s prepared in our restaurant and incorporates
local ingredients,” Courtney says.
The waterview wine bar is a great place to come for
an appetizer or small plate, a glass of wine (or experiment with a wine flight)
or a dessert. Take in the pretty view as well as the ambiance of this
wonderfully designed restaurant—built in a sustainable and artful manner.
In Fish
Creek, near it all
But you’ll want to venture beyond the The Cookery's
Lodging and the Cookery restaurant. And you really won’t have far to go to
enjoy shopping, the beach, the park and more. They are all within walking distance of the Hanson Suite and
Hanson Cottage.
You can also cross Hwy. 42 and go to the beach.
Just north of the Cookery is the entrance to Peninsula State Park. If you are a history buff, take a tour
of the historic Noble House Museum. There are clusters of shops and boutiques south of the Cookery at
Founders Square as well as north of your room.
“You can walk to everything in Fish Creek. The kids
like the public beach across the street, and a lot of people bring their bikes
up here and bike to the park. You can come here, park your car and not drive it
if you don’t want to leave Fish Creek,” Courtney says.
Indeed, The Cookery's Lodging is a
great bases for enjoying Fish Creek, as well as the rest of Door County. The
owners are conscientious about keeping elements of the lodgings updated, and we
invite you to give them a call and check out the suite or cottage for yourself. Make sure you refer to their Property ID # DCN4135 when you call, and please tell them DoorCountyNavigator.com sent
you!
