Harbor House Inn is a wonderful retreat tucked away on the north end of the peninsula in Gills Rock, right across from the waters of Green Bay! Gills Rock is a quiet fishing village just a couple blocks from the passenger ferry to Washington Island and within walking distance to a restaurant, shopping and Charlie’s Smokehouse. Just a short drive will take you to the car ferry dock or to Bea’s Ho-made Products, the best pies, jams and jellies in Door County!

We took a tour of this Victorian-style B&B, and were impressed with the attention to detail and variety of amenities available at this inn. There is a very cozy Great Room with a fireplace where guests are always welcome. You can enjoy a board game or watch a movie on the big-screen TV. Each morning, a Continental-plus breakfast is served where you can savor specialties like Belgian Waffles with Door County Cherries and whipped cream or Blueberry Pancakes. Relax outside in the gazebo or sip your morning coffee on one of the decks overlooking the Green Bay waters and fishing harbor. You can even watch a beautiful Gills Rock sunset from your own private deck or nap in the hammock!

Harbor House offers a whirlpool and sauna cabin, private baths, air-conditioning, bike rentals, gas grills and DirecTV in all rooms. Children and pets are welcome in some rooms for a small, additional fee. Most of the inn is open March 1, through November 30; the Lighthouse Suite is open year-’round.

The Original Home

The original home, built in 1904, now offers three Victorian rooms on the first floor, two of which have a private entrance from a shared deck with a Bay view. The “Skipper” has a queen bed; the “South Bay” and “Gem” will sleep three with a queen bed and twin bed in each room.

The second floor boasts four rooms, the “Jenny Lind” and the “Mermaid” with queen beds, the “Crow’s Nest” with twin beds and a private balcony with a lovely harbor view and the “Blue Belle” with twin beds. Most rooms in the Victorian house have a refrigerator and all have private baths.

An expanded addition to the inn is decorated in Scandinavian Country with light pine for an open and airy feeling. The four rooms available in this wing, the “Commodore,” “Galleon,” “First Mate” and “Spinnaker,” have queen beds with queen sofa sleepers, a microwave, refrigerator and sitting area in each, private decks with a Bay view and full baths. The Commodore and Galleon also offer a large turret bay window with a beautiful water view.

In 1998, the “Lighthouse” was added. This unique building is a replica of a lighthouse with a side deck overlooking the Bay. The “Lighthouse Suite” in on the second level and offers a living room with porthole windows, a fireplace, entertainment center, microwave and refrigerator, separate bedroom with a comfy queen bed, and in the bathroom – a double whirlpool bathtub. The Lighthouse Suite is perfect for a romantic get-away!

Cottages

Harbor House Inn also offers two cottages. The “Troll Cottage” is tucked into the tall pine trees, and boasts a back and front deck with a harbor view. The Troll Cottage was a carriage house in years past and the stovewood construction of the early pioneers to Door County has been preserved. This rustic cottage has a living room, full kitchen and bath downstairs. Upstairs you’ll find a loft area with twin beds and a private bedroom with a full bed. There is also a fire pit in the back where you can make S’mores and create some family memories!

Then, on the opposite side of this 2-acre property, you will find “Danish Cottage.” This cottage is built in the “Tudor” style and has a living room with a sofa sleeper, full kitchen, bathroom, large bedroom with a king bed and walk-in closet. Just outside is your own covered cabana with a wood-burning fireplace and gas grill – just what you need for a cozy evening hideaway! The “Loft,” located on the second floor of the Danish Cottage with a private entrance. The Loft is a large room with a king bed, queen sofa sleeper, balcony, microwave and refrigerator and of course, a private bath.
