Places to Stay : Sister bay

Open Hearth Lodge
1109 S Bay Shore Dr
Sister Bay
920-854-4890

Wow – we have been on a roll of finding some great places to stay and for super great values. Here is another winner for under $100 even in high season – so keep on reading about the Open Hearth Lodge in Sister Bay!

When you enter the main lobby, you get a welcomed, comfortable feeling – there is an air of calm here. To the left is your check in desk, and to the right, a lovely seating area with a huge cut fieldstone fireplace, couches, wing back chairs – really like a living room for you to relax, or wait for friends before you head out for another great Door County day. In the morning, coffee and bakery is served here, and in the Fall (they are open year round) you can smell the fragrant hot cider brewing just for you!

There is a coffee area too off the main lobby – where it’s always hot and fresh. The lodge is located on 6.5 acres, and so offers hiking trails through its meadows and land – this is a very nice amenity as the grounds and acreage are beautiful. There is also a small playground area for kids, a brick patio with chairs, umbrella tables and more for your enjoyment. Nice!

Pool! Hot Tub!

Open Hearth Lodge also has a very nice sized pool for guests, which ranges in depth from 3’ to 5’. The pool area has all wooden walls, and lots of glass and windows to let in natural light. There is even a bathroom off the pool, and a separate room with windows all around that houses a terrific hot tub spa that can hold 10+ people – great size!

The Rooms

Offering a total of 32 rooms, you will find them all very similar in terms of style, décor and comfort. There are 3 rooms with 1 queen bed, one 2-bedroom suite, and 28 rooms with 2 queen beds. Only 2 rooms are smoking designated rooms. All the rooms have individual air conditioning and heating controls, cable TV, a fridge and phone. All the rooms have cozy touches like stenciling above the headboards and mirror, some country accents like floral wreathes and more. Kids are welcomed, but no pets please.

As you walk through the hallways, you will note soft wheat grain/floral stenciling along the walls, which adds another degree of comfort to the place.

Room #104

We first toured Room #104, which offers 2 queen size beds with floral mauve/green/gold quilts, wood headboards, dresser, table with upholstered chairs, and nice Kari Anderson (a great local artist) artwork on the walls. The room is carpeted with coordinating colors to the bed clothes, and the bathroom offers a tub/shower combination, tiled floor and vanity outside the bathroom (nice when multiple people are getting ready at the same time to head out)!

There is charming floral stenciling above the headboards and mirror, and a cozy floral wreath hanging between the beds (see photo).

These rooms are comfortable, well decorated and clean!

Room # 106

Very similar to the set-up in Room # 104, except this one is wheelchair accessible according to Sandy, the owner. There are 3 of this type of room.

We headed upstairs to take a look at the second floor 2-bedroom unit.

2-Bedroom Unit # 220

The entry area has a chair, fridge and drop leaf table. Ahead is a beautiful bathroom, with nautical shower curtain, and floral blue striped wallpaper. Bedroom 1 has a queen bed, purple quilt and country furniture and touches (nightstand, and a shelf above the bed with a floral spray), a large closet, and a chair and TV too! Bedroom 2 looks quite the same, with same quilt, sailing ship artwork, window, a couple of chairs and a TV. This is a nice unit for a larger family, or couples traveling together.

Room #221

A Deluxe Queen room, with huge built-in headboard with shelves, drawers, mirror. A table and 3 chairs, window with a grassy view complete the room. The bathroom has a standing shower and tile floor.

Room # 210

Another second floor offering, this unit has a great meadow view - which is a top request at Open Hearth Lodge. I can see why – a peaceful and tranquil view of a beautiful meadow, trees, bushes, grass. Calming!

Again, 2 queen beds and other similar amenities and décor. Great!

HINT: there are 15 rooms that face the meadow, so if you want a meadow view, please make sure to request it!

Room # 218

This room has one queen size bed, and a love seat. Same clean, crisp comfortable set-up as the other rooms, and similar décor.

Room # 217

This one queen bed offering has a beautiful tree swaying right outside your window. A recliner, TV and same amenities and touches as the other rooms.

Guests love the Open Hearth Lodge for its

  • Peace and Quiet– it is neatly tucked off the road so you do not get a lot of road noise
  • Friendliness – Sandy and her staff will take care of you and make you feel at home!
  • Cleanliness – this place (everywhere we looked) is exceptionally clean! And at a great value too!

Easy to find, as you head north on Hwy 42 to Sister Bay, when you get to the bottom of the big hill (there’s a radio Shack on the right), you will also find the Open Hearth Lodge nestled off the main road on the right.

Our tour completed, we were very happy to have discovered Open Hearth Lodge! Guests keep coming back to Open Hearth too because, as Sandy said, “Once they find it, they love it!” Well, we helped you find it! So go check it out now – we think you’ll love it too! And please tell them that you found them on DoorCountyNavigator.com!
