The Barbican Inn, built in 1867, is a beautiful grouping of three turn-of-the century estates in the downtown area of Sturgeon Bay. 17 Theme Rooms, each unique, welcome guests. This inn is open year round.

We toured every room in this fabulous inn, with innkeeper, Megan, and later discussed the inn with the owner, Jim Pichette. In general, each room is magnificently set up to reflect a specific theme, and all include whirlpool, private bath and gas fireplace.

The Barbican cannot be considered just an inn or a bed and breakfast. Each theme room affords the opportunity to escape into whatever fantasy suits you, from rustic to Roman, from the Governor’s room to the Veranda or Pines! Clearly, intended for to attract adult couples, each suite is nearly a world unto its own. Our favorite was the Pines which was multi-level, the bedroom overlooking the living room and the whirlpool in between. You really have to be there to appreciate it. The largest suite, the Coach House, is a converted barn, which can easily accommodate a large family – it is simply huge! The main room has couches, and tables set up in a cozy arrangement, and old, original double coach house doors open up to revel the sleeping rooms, which were originally where the horses were kept! There are two bedrooms like this, as well as a loft bedroom where hay was stacked and pile in the old days! The innkeepers have a unique way and talent for decorating, with tremendous examples of antiques, old steamer trunks, and unusually lamps and other accessories that really tie together the themes in each room – their talent is obvious throughout every square inch of the inn!
