Overview
This
is a terrific inn, full of history, romance, charm and elegance! In the
heart of the shopping district of Sturgeon Bay, you can walk to dozens
of shops, restaurants, cafes, taverns and more!
The building at 3rd and Louisiana that now is home to the Inn at Cedar
Crossing was built in 1884, and has, through the decades, been a tailor
shop, an apothecary, a soda fountain, clothing store, and doctors
offices. There is a lot of history here. . .if these walls could talk!
Today, after careful renovation and restoration, the inn enjoys a listing
on the National Historic Register.
When you walk in the lobby off of Louisiana Street, you really feel the
warmth of a first-class inn the open stairway leads up to the rooms,
a harvest table with chairs invites you to sit and relax, tin ceilings,
and a fireplace felt really good on our first visit to the inn on a chilly
day in April! Upstairs, 9 well-appointed rooms await the traveler. We
met both with Deb McDonald, the inn manager, and Terry Smith the owner
and spent some time with each discussing and touring the inn.
As we
toured the rooms, it was apparent that any of the nine rooms would offer
beauty, comfort and charm as they are authentically decorated with the
utmost in taste. We toured 4 rooms on our first trip. Room 3 (Victorian
Romance), for example, has a beautiful queen-sized brass canopy bed, a
fireplace, period antiques, Victorian lamps, a TV neatly concealed in
an armoire, and is rich in color with greens, and accents in gold and
berries. Room 4 (Vintage Roses) has a 4-poster, a whirlpool, fireplace,
marble-topped period dressing table, and vintage rose wallpaper and window
treatments complete the look. Room 5 (Apple Orchard) has a lighter wood
queen-sized 4-poster, with a fabulous lace canopy, an oak fireplace, writing
table to send home a note, wicker rockers, and a double whirlpool. The
apple wallpaper border, plaid curtains, and rich apple-patterned bedclothes
really add charm and coziness to the room. And Suite 6 (the Corner Suite)
boasts a sitting area overlooking 3rd Avenue, an ornate, carved wooden
archway separating the sitting area from the bedroom, which has a sleeper
sofa, and a unique, old pull-wagon coffee table. The decor is in deep
greens in the sitting area to bouquet wallpapering in the bedroom side.
In addition, there is a wonderful common room for sitting around, chatting,
reading, watching TV, or having some popcorn that is provided. There is
a writing desk here, bookshelves stocked with a nice selection and a whole
lot more!
All the rooms have private baths, TVs and fireplaces. Kids are OK, but
no pets. Please check the inn's website for current rates, but the new
owners (as of the Spring of 2003) have said they plan to lower some of
the rates! So check it out! What do people who stay here like most about
the inn? They love the service and attitude of the people who work here
- always anticipating needs - the overall atmosphere of the inn (charming
and comfy) and the attention to detail - everything is well done! Our
staff member stayed at the inn one May and really thought it was first-rate
all the way.
The Inn also boasts a terrific Victorian restaurant and pub that is reviewed
in our restaurant section. We like this place!
