AppleCreek Resort Motel & Suites |
When you want a walk-to-everything location and a lot of choice in room accommodations, AppleCreek Resort may be the place for you in Door County. You have heard it before – “Location. Location. Location.” And this location is ideal!
The 35-room resort (plus guest house with two bedrooms, two baths) offers up six different room styles in a two-level sprawling building constructed in 1993 by the current owners/innkeepers Bill Weddig and Lynne Krause Weddig.
The centerpiece of the place is a gorgeous indoor pool that is 40 feet long and three to five feet deep. Perfect for swimming laps, the rectangular-shaped pool is surrounded by an indoor patio, outdoor deck and a natural beam ceiling made from Douglas fir.
But take a dip in the pool after you check-in one of the comfortable rooms or lovely two-room suites available here.
The Accommodations
Whether you are traveling with the kids or with friends, AppleCreek can accommodate. For example, the queen luxury suite, at 449 square feet, has a queen-sized bed in the bedroom and a Murphy bed and sofa/sleeper in the adjoining sitting room. So, it’s perfect for giving everyone in the group a cozy place to rest their head.
A suite is also chosen by people who want to spread out as they enjoy amenities such as a whirlpool, fireplace and wet bar.
All AppleCreek suites and rooms have television/VCRs, refrigerators, private balconies and individually controlled air conditioning and heating.
Honeymooners enjoy privacy in AppleCreek’s honeymoon suites. A striking focal point is the bedroom which is open to the whirlpool tub (the toilet and sink are behind closed doors). Your eye will also be drawn to the quiet view of 50 foot pine trees from the windows in the sitting room.
“When they are on their honeymoon, we try to ensure they will not be disturbed,” says Lynne, who took DoorCountyNavigator.com on a personal tour of the different room accommodations. Not just for honeymooners, these suites also have sofa/sleepers and king-sized beds.
Other accommodations are rooms with a single queen bed (and sofa sleeper)—some have a shower only and not a tub. Rooms with two queen-sized beds and a sofa/sleeper are often chosen by a family of two adults and four children.
Painted white paneling gives the standard/economy rooms a cottage feel. The vintage side tables and desk and the pedestal sink in the bath (no tub, just shower) are simply charming.
“These rooms are rented all the time by retirees who are watching their budget or by bicyclists who are out all day biking and just looking for a place to sleep,” Lynne says.
One of the nicest rooms on DoorCountyNavigator.com’s tour was a king suite on the lower level. We also liked the view of the pool from the upper level corridor and the aroma of Berres Brothers coffee throughout the resort. The king suite actually opens up to the pool’s outdoor deck and affords guests a gorgeous overlook of flowers that are personally nourished by Lynne.
The Grounds and Gardens!
“I love flowers. I love going out there and monkeying around, relaxing. There are lilies out there, a burning bush, tulips, daffodils – different things at different times,” Lynne says.
In addition to the pool area, her perennial gardens can be found throughout AppleCreek’s campus—in the courtyard, near the sign, at roadside. Red ivy geraniums spill from flower boxes on all the rooms’ balconies, and red impatiens greet guests as they pull up under the carport.
After you park the car, you may not even have to move it from AppleCreek. It’s amazing how much is so close to this country resort. Cross one street, and find yourself at Top of the Hill Shops, which offers 24 home décor shops, boutiques, galleries and more.
Pick up a paintbrush, and join in a class at Peninsula Art School, also located across the street. And within walking distance are the Door Community Auditorium and an Italian restaurant.
And it’s just a block to Peninsula State Park’s biking, hiking and cross country ski trails. The state park also has an 18-hole golf course and is home to summer performances by American Folklore Theatre.
A native of Fish Creek, Lynne grew up near the park’s entrance and knows what’s off the beaten path. “Some of the trails go along the water, and there are caves,“ she says.
Both Bill and Lynne, parents of a son, Casey, and twin girls, Kaylee and Kelsey, can be found working at AppleCreek daily, year- round. But they find some time to enjoy boating, the arts and new Door County restaurants, too.
“I love Fish Creek. I was born and raised here, and I want guests to enjoy what I have enjoyed,” Lynne says. “I feel I’m on vacation.”
