It’s downtown location in one of Door County’s most popular destinations makes is a great place for those of you who love to experience the many activities this unique village has to offer. What’s even better is you can take it all in while staying in a clean, comfortable room with fantastic a view of the Fish Creek’s public beach and active harbor. Not all the rooms at this motel have a full water view, but you will get at least a partial view and all rooms have balconies that allow a better vantage point to watch the activities outside. There are two separate buildings that have a total of 15 rooms. There is also a large suite in the main building that house the motel office and owners living quarters.
Owners Mary and John Koehler were extremely accommodating in showing us around and filling us in on the improvements they have made, adding their personal touch to this already fine motel. The first thing we noticed is how clean and well maintained the property is. Flower boxes and hanging flower baskets adorn the balconies of the motel buildings. On the evening we viewed the property, John stayed busy watering the flowerbeds along the driveway and Mary was busy talking with us and conversing with guests as they came and went.
Mary and John feel customer service is an important element in running their business. “ A clean room and friendly service say a lot about a place” she commented. What’s unique about By the Bay is the rare combination of fantastic views and prime location within walking distance to the many galleries, shops, lounges and restaurants in the area.
One of the most popular questions asked is “where’s a good place to eat?” Two of their favorites are Stillwaters and Julie's, both in town. Stillwaters serves and American fare and has great outdoor seating, and Julie's is a cute welcoming palce with great food. We have been to Stillwaters and Julie's. Mary and John are right on! The Cookery is nearby too and is great.
We viewed two rooms and the large suite at By the Bay Motel. The rooms were very clean and tastefully decorated. Each of the rooms is uniquely decorated with different wallpaper, bedspreads and furnishings. You can get a room with queen beds or one king bed. Much of the furniture is Early American, giving the rooms a nice and comfortable feeing. Plenty of places to keep your things, while the bathrooms feature full showers with tub.
Our favorite is the large suite located in the main building, which has a huge deck that faces the water with a large tree growing up through it! There are a couple of lounge chairs and a table with chairs that provide a great way to relax and people watch. There are flower boxes and a flowered wreath hanging on the door to greet you. Inside you will find a large living room with a nice couch, two comfy high-backed chairs and a coffee table. To the right is the gas fireplace, complete with a beautiful oil painting with Victorian frame hanging above it. The painting was originally owned by Mary's grandmother (so is about 100 years old). There are so many of the other special touches in this suite like other pictures and antiques, which give this suite a very home-like atmosphere. Against the back wall is a large bookcase filled with a collection of Mary’s favorites, from Charles Dickens to Readers Digest. This area has two oversized chairs with ottoman’s, a tray of wineglasses, a small refrigerator and many end tables. Off to the left is the bedroom with a king-sized bed, chair, dresser, two closets with bi-fold doors, and cable TV with VCR. The bathroom is very roomy with a larger shower unit with tub! We liked this suite a whole lot!
All the rooms are air-conditioned, have cable TV and are smoke free.
The By the Bay Motel is a great place to stay if you like to people watch, observe the activities of the harbor and be within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants of the water side village of Fish Creek. And you will get a clean, comfortable room, well appointed, and at a very affordable price. By the Bay Motel is located across the street form Fish Creek’s public beach, which has a sandy shoreline and is always filled with sunbathers or family picnic goers. Coffee shops and other fine shops are all around you!
