In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, here are five great places to propose marriage in Door County. Keep them in mind, as they are great romantic places—any day of the year.
And many of them are worthy of being included on your Door County itinerary whether or not you intend to pop or answer the question.
- On the beach at Whitefish Dunes State Park
Whitefish Dunes State Park is home to a lovely white sand beach on Door County’s lake side. It’s the perfect spot to take a walk and get down on your knees (as the sand is so soft, after all).
The beach, stretching along three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, is ranked as one of the best in the Midwest. And it’s a part of Whitefish Dunes State Park, a 865-acre state park affording 14 miles of diverse hiking trails that traverse woods, meadows and hills; about eight miles are groomed in the winter. - At Cave Point, Sevastopol
Cave Point is a natural landmark and quintessential Door Peninsula—rock and water, rugged yet beautiful, peaceful but popular.
Cave Point County Park offers an intimate view of jagged cliffs and sea caves along Lake Michigan shoreline. On a windy day, waves crash on the dolomite bedrock, which formed millions of years ago and changed shape as erosion took its toll.
Come on a still day, and hear clear lake water lapping about 50 feet below. You get the picture: this is a romantic spot. - During a horse-drawn carriage ride in Sturgeon Bay
Hop inside a horse-drawn carriage, such as those that operate in Sturgeon Bay by the D.C. Carriage Co. The pretty white carriage travels by historic Sturgeon Bay buildings as well as the waterfront.
And it’s pleasant and comforting to hear the sound of the horse walking. And one of the best times to take a carriage ride is during a light snowfall, which can happen around Valentine’s Day. The owner provides warm blankets to use inside the carriage. - On a sailboat on the bay of Green Bay
For a different perspective, get on the water on a sailboat. Many sail in Door County from Eagle Harbor, Ephraim. Try Bella Sailing Cruises. Its captain, Tom Schroeder, sails on a catamaran built by the Chicago Sea Scouts in 1960.
Oh, by the way, Captain Schroeder said you won’t be the first to propose while on one of his cruises. - Atop of Eagle Tower, Fish Creek
Head to Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek, where you’ll find the iconic Eagle Tower, an observation tower that stands 76-feet high. Climb to the top where you can have a view of Green Bay waters, surrounding islands and this lovely state park—the largest in Door County.
All you need is love and a vehicle sticker for entry.
