Places to Stay : Egg Harbor

The Mariner Motel
7505 Mariner Road
Egg Harbor
920-868-3131

Nestled on 60 wooded acres of land, with 500 feet of shoreline, The Mariner offers a wide selection of accommodations along the Egg Harbor shore. And people have been coming here, and back here year after year since 1962. The view from the Mariner Shores is wonderful, as you can see the sparkling waters of Green Bay, the Egg Harbor shoreline, Chambers Island, Green Island, Hat Island, Strawberry Island and even the coastline of Michigan!

We met with Pat Nevins, the owner and a true delight, and took a tour. After your winding drive up the road to get to the Mariner, you can see why people find solitude and tranquility here. The grounds have hiking trails, you can sit at some tables on the deck overlooking the water and relax, have a coffee or read a paper, you can hop in a canoe or rowboat, or even a rubber raft and relax on the water. Bigger kids can even swim off the dock.

The coast is rocky, not sandy, but kids and adults alike have fun building castles, or in some cases whole towns, with the rocks! This is a peaceful place that offers simple motel room type accommodations, plus cottages, and additional deluxe rooms (the Captain’s Quarters) that have water views – you must see the water view – spectacular – and guests can get to see some spectacular and famous Door County sunsets.

The pool ranges in depth from 3’ to 4 1/2 ’ – fenced in, with lounge chairs, looks inviting and welcomes guests – this is a very much used feature of The Mariner in summer! And kids love it.

The Motel Rooms: Water and Pool View
Perpendicular to the main building, which houses the office, is a row of 9 motel rooms. Hint: #1 is the closet to the water and deck. All the motel rooms have a nautical theme carried throughout, have TVs, coffeemakers, a ceiling fan and extra vanity (handy for multiple people getting ready for a day out on the grounds or out and about Door County). PLEASE NOTE: there is no air conditioning in these rooms, but Pat assures us that with the cross-ventilation in each of these 8 rooms, ceiling fan and proximity to the cool waters, it would be rarely needed. She should know – she’s been doing this for decades right here at The Mariner!

These rooms all have a window facing the pool, and a window facing grass and trees.

Room # 1
We toured Room # 1, the one closest to the water and deck. Two queen beds with blue quilts, nautical wallpaper detailing lighthouses in blue tones, coordinating blue striped curtains (looked new), a separate vanity sink outside the main bathroom area and small fridge make this a fine room that is a doorstep away from the deck and gorgeous deck views, and the pool. The bathroom is also nautical themed (as are all the 9 rooms in this section) with boats and water. Nice, clean, functional bath and sleeping room.

Cottages
We next took a look at one of the cottages (the red one – there are no names for the cottages, but this one is either # 3 or 4 on the rate sheet!), a 3 bedroom one facing the water. 3 of the 4 cottages available face the water – so if you want one facing the water, ask first! The cottages range from 2 bedrooms to 3 bedrooms. Also, cottages rent by the week only. No air conditioning, but again, nature cools these cottages pretty well, Pat says.

The “red “ cottage has a sitting area facing the water with a wicker style table and chairs, striped floral couch, dining table and small kitchen. Bedroom one has a double bed, nightstand and lamp, nautical sailing ship curtains, and a dresser. Bedroom 2 has 2 twin beds, a wicker nightstand and table, dresser, and nautical curtains (of course!). Bedroom 3 has 1 double bed, dresser and nautical theme as well. We like the red cottage, and felt it would be a very comfortable stay for a family or group, with an ideal location facing the water. Check it out!

The Captain’s Quarters
The Captain’s Quarters offer 8 rooms, 4 with kitchenettes, all with air conditioning, and all with water views from private decks. You can soak up some great sunsets from these rooms! We toured #s 21 and 23.

Captain’s Quarters Room # 21
This is a spacious room with 2 queen beds, 2 blue and white plaid upholstered comfy chairs, ceiling fan, a coffeemaker, TV, microwave and fridge – what else can you need? The walls are a combination of elements – behind the beds is a brick wall, the others are wood on the bottom and nautical wallpapers above of anchors, buoys and the like. What else do you need? Well, how about a fantastic view from the balcony? Well, you have one from this room – a beautiful view of the waters, island and more!

Captain’s Quarters Room # 23
Again, 2 queen beds with blue quilts are offered, a striped carpet, a table and 4 chairs, a small kitchenette (with fridge, sink, 2-burner stove, microwave), TV, dresser, and walls of wood and nautical wallpaper, with 2 wing back chairs, and a private deck with another fabulous view!

The Captain’s Quarters are really upgraded rooms, each offering a great view. We received an email from one of our users who said she has stayed at the Mariner, and specifically at the Captain’s Quarters for over 25 years in a row! We can see why!

The Mariner gets, as you can see, lots of repeat guests – loyal guests, who come back year after year after year. What do guests comment about? They love the solitude, peace - and the people who stay here actually talk to each other and see each other each year – ahh – like the old days when people could have the luxury to take the time to talk! This is so nice. And it still happens . . . at The Mariner!

When you stay at The Mariner, you are literally minutes away from the downtown section of Egg Harbor, a mile or so from sandy public beaches, a 15 minute ride maximum to 4 wonderful golf courses, including Alpine, and tucked away far from the noise. Perfect! This is a great Door County place run by great folks!

Pat, the owner, sums up her decades at The Mariner on her brochure:

“As the last rays of light disappear over Green Bay and the frogs and crickets begin their nightly symphony, you realize this is the way nature has said ‘Good Night’ in Door County since the first visitor arrived. You just have to be in the right place to hear it.”

Well, with the skies full of stars, the frogs croaking, a cool breeze blowing across the Bay waters – The Mariner is the right place! Please check out their website now for current rate information (you will be pleasantly surprised!) and availability. And please tell Pat that you found her wonderful place on DoorCountyNavigator.com!
