![]() Places to Stay : Ephraim Trollhaugen Lodge - B&B Inn, Motel & Log Cabin
These three separate buildings are nestled on a hill just north of the Village of Ephraim. A total of 14 accommodations are offered with pretty views of the woods. “We have so much to offer in such a small place,” says Norma, who owns Trollhaugen with her husband, Terry. “This is a unique property; not everyone has three different types of accommodations.” And you can’t miss the place; just look for the vintage wooden trolls, which kind of greet you from Hwy. 42. The trolls have been called one of the most photographed subjects in Door County! All accommodations are updated and furnished with refrigerator, coffeemaker and hair dryer for guests’ convenience. There is bottled water for guests in the B&B rooms and Log Cabin, and all rooms are equipped with air conditioning, cable/television with DVD and CD players, WI-FI and phones. Some rooms have additional amenities. Read on, and see Trollhaugen’s Web site for details B&B Inn
Behind you is a “brag wall” filled with notes, cards and e-mails from past guests. One person wrote: “What a wonderful place to celebrate our anniversary. What wonderful people you are. . .” The B&B, a member of the Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast Association, has a common room with seating space and a dining area. There’s a great deck off the dining room, providing additional seating. If you decide to stay at the B&B, come down to the common room between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
Terry has enough ideas to go for 30 days without repeating a menu item. He prepares a variety of pancakes, quiches, French toast, breakfast lasagna and much more. Homemade chocolate chip cookies or another treat are available in the late afternoon. DoorCountyNavigator.com missed breakfast time and the afternoon treat, but we loved the decorating touch of original Door County art in the common room—watercolors, rosemalling, even professionally done photographs of Trollhaugen property, taken by former guests. In addition to the common room, there are two rooms on the B&B’s first floor. The fireplace room is named for its woodburning fireplace. There’s a seating area with two chairs and a table (all B&B rooms have two chairs and a table). You can watch television or read near the fire, or rest on the queen-size bed. All rooms in the B&B are pretty; Norma decorates them with lovely pastels. The three rooms upstairs have private balconies. Some have charming vintage armoires. One of the rooms upstairs, called a mini suite, is very spacious and has a king- size bed, gas fireplace and entertainment center. There’s a sleeper sofa here, too, and a bigger deck faces west—great for sunset views. In the mini suite, there’s a vaulted ceiling, gas fireplace and updated bath. For your convenience, there is a wet bar, too. “There are some people who will not do anything but stay in this suite. They will come down for breakfast and that is it. They enjoy it. They have been coming to Door County for years and want to stay here and relax,” Terry says. The log cabin
DoorCountyNavigator.com can picture a writer enjoying this little cabin. But if you don’t have a novel in you, think of it for a restful getaway. Many guests spend honeymoons here. Its cedar and pine log walls and pine floors give a cozy feel. There’s a queen-size bed in the main living area, a woodburning fireplace and TV with VCR. Also, CD and cassette player is available. In the kitchen, there are custom-made countertops in pecky Cyprus, which are stunning. The kitchen is outfitted with a stove, refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker. Also here are pine floors. Coffee and muffins are provided to guests who stay in the log cabin. The bath has a pedestal sink, shower, pine bead-boarded walls. The shelving unit in this room was actually made from a recycled log cabin wall. “People love the cabin. They call it charming. Everything about it is so cute. They come here and forget about their worries,” Norma says. There’s also a private deck with a gas grill. Motel The AAA-rated motel offers very spacious and clean accommodations. And it’s a great choice for families to stay - the B&B is adults only. There are four rooms with two double beds in each on the upper level and four rooms with king size beds and futons on the lower level or yard level. All rooms afford lovely views of the woods and green space. Coffee and muffins are provided to motel guests. All motel rooms have a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, hair dryer iron, cable/television with DVD and CD players, WI-FI and phones. Outdoors at Trollhaugen, you’ll find a spa, tented gazebo and tables and chairs. There’s an authenticity to Trollhaugen—a good feeling you get from its setting on a hill (trollhaugen is a Norwegian word meaning trolls on a hill, the owners say). And Trollhaugen is about half a mile north of the Village of Ephraim, which offers sailboat charters, shopping in galleries and boutiques, the Hardy Gallery and more. If you like a great breakfast (B&B only) and seek a true Door County experience in a warm and welcoming place, think about calling now, or clicking through to the Trollhaugen website now for additional information, rates and availability.
