Harbor Guest House is a wonderful year-round waterfront retreat and marina, right in Fish Creek, one of the most active towns in Door County. Yet, its location offers quiet and solitude, as it sits on the waterfront and away from main Hwy 42, which is really nice. Built in the early 1900’s, the Harbor Guest House was originally a carriage house for a large estate that was located nearby (actually on the grounds of what is now the Hidden Harbor Condominiums). So it’s style and architecture is rustic and the grounds just beautiful because it is literally right on the water. We have stood on the decks overlooking the waterfront, and it is quite serene and beautiful.
Unlike a traditional inn or B&B, the Harbor Guest House offers six 1 and 2 bedroom accommodations that are more like luxury apartments, complete with fieldstone fireplaces, kitchens, private waterfront patios or balconies, telephones, color cable TV, linen service, charcoal grills, transient boat slips, and a panoramic views of the waters of Green Bay and the gorgeous Peninsula State Park. And yes, they have wireless internet access available!
Harbor Guest House also welcomes groups for things like family reunions or small corporate gatherings.
We toured 4 of the units, and were impressed – the views are just awesome. Also offered is a boat house, which was occupied at the time of our review.
The Luxury Accommodations
We started our tour upstairs.
Unit 4, a two bedroom unit
As you walk into the main room, there is a bathroom to the left. Ahead, you peer through the windows at the harbor just below – beautiful. To the left is a sitting area which includes a herringbone tope couch, coordinating love seat, a unique ship’s wheel coffee table, fieldstone fireplace, easy chair and rocking chair. Exit through a door to step out on the balcony overlooking the water.
The dining area has a large wooden trestle table with Windsor-style chairs – just in front of the window overlooking the harbor. The U-shaped, wallpapered kitchen is fully equipped with all the basics, including a coffeemaker and even the coffee! The Formica-style countertop houses a double stainless steel sink, coffeemaker, microwave, toaster, and more. All utensils, pots and pans, dishes and more are provided. The eating counter ahs 2 swivel chairs.
The bathroom has a shower/tub, standard vanity and mirror, and tile flooring. Very clean.
The first bedroom has a king bed with wooden-posted headboard, floral quilt, 2 primitive-style nightstands flanking the bed, a 4-drawer dresser, large closet and door that accesses the hallway bathroom.
Bedroom 2 sports 2 twin beads covered in yellow quilts, green washboard-style headboards and nightstand, TV and a small bench. There is a wallpapered, clean powder room connected. The ceiling follows the contours of the roof, for architectural detail. A built-in-the-wall 6 drawer dresser is a clever way not to use up floor space, and offers plenty of storage.
Unit 5: a 1 Bedroom Unit
This is a comfortable unit. As you walk in through a long hallway flanked by a wooden bench to the right and closet to the left, you see the living room area with plaid queen sleeper sofa, pine coffee table and a coordinating wing-back chair. Double glass doors look out to the harbor and Peninsula State Park, and offer a small trapezoid-shaped deck for relaxing and watching the water and boats – what a spot for a morning coffee!
A wooden/wicker chair, table with books, and dining area for 4 complete the grouping. A small galley kitchen offers enough space to prepare what you need, as wooden-veneered cabinets house all that you need.
Down a short hallway is a large bathroom, with tub/shower with glass doors and tiled floor.
The bedroom with king bed with metal headboard in black and brass accents, is draped in a floral comforter. You will also find a small TV, sitting chair and plenty of closet space.
Unit # 2 – Ground Level 1Bedroom
Walk in on the ground floor and ahead see the fireplace, queen sleeper sofa, pine coffee table and a nubby-striped winged-back chair. Double doors lead to the patio and Adirondack chairs, only 15 feet from the water! The dining area has trestle table and seating for four. The small galley kitchen is complete, with cabinets like in Unit #5. The bedroom is large, with a 1940’s style dresser, king bed clad in yellow quilt, with black metal headboard, primitive-style nightstands on either side, a large closet, and TV. Bath is clean, with shower/tub combination.
Unit # 6 – Upstairs – 1 Bedroom
Walk up to the great room, with trestle pine dining table and seating for six. A plaid sleeper sofa, wicker cushioned chair, and coordinating winged-back chair completed the grouping. The kitchen is galley, with same cabinets as #5. Double doors lead to a small porch overlooking the harbor and Peninsula State Park.
Bathroom has a shower/tub combination again, clean with tiled floor.
The bedroom is charming, wit king bed, antique brass bed frame, 2 large easy chairs, nightstands, small writing desk (“Wish you were here!”) tucked away in a nook, and a 16 drawer built-in-the-wall storage plus a closet!
A very nice unit indeed.
