Places to Stay : Sturgeon Bay

The Scofield House
908 Michigan St.
Sturgeon Bay
920-743-7727

Built in 1902 by Bert and Augusta Scofield, the Scofield House stands as a primary example of the affluence of the turn-of-the century Scofield family, as detailed in the beautiful beveled crystal and stained glass windows, woodworking that is second to none with beautiful wainscoting and trim, and oak floors that have intricate inlaid designs around the perimeters of the rooms (there are five designs in all throughout the house!).
Bert was the mayor of Sturgeon Bay in 1899 and again in 1901, so the house is replete with history! The Scofield family owned the house until around 1952,and the walls are decorated with old photos of the original Scofield family.

From the cozy foyer, well-appointed sitting room full of antiques and period pieces, woven oriental carpeting, Victorian lamps, and fireplace to the music room with an old upright piano pile high with other antique instruments like violins and old photos, the house oozes with hospitality. The 6 rooms all look like a picture from the late 1800's or early 1900's. They are each beautiful in their own way.

Dan and Vicki Klein acquired the inn (which is open year-round) from previous owners, Carolyn and Mike Pietrek, in May 2004. Let's look at the rooms, all of which have private baths and more, in this charming house. We have been in everyone except the Gazebo Room, which was occupied at the time of our visit.

The Turret Suite boasts a gorgeous antique burled walnut bed, a period marble-top washstand, and an English armoire that hides the TV/VCR in the most splendid way! The bathroom is immense, and there is a small sitting room that invites you to relax on its Victorian loveseat. There is also an outside balcony where you can relax and enjoy some wine.

The Nouveau Bleu Room has a Victorian burled walnut bed frame as wee, from the 1880's, a fireplace, double whirlpool and fine green, lincrusta under the chair rails. Lincrusta is an embossed pattern that is painted, and very unusual and inviting. This is a beautiful room!

The Rose Room has natural oak and inlaid floors, a Renaissance Revival queen-sized bed complete with ornate walnut bed frame, a English walnut armoire, a cathedral-ceiling bath with a double whirlpool and separate showers, antique stained glass windows, a fireplace, bookshelves stocked with all kinds of good dreading and a whole lot more!

The Water Lily Room again boasts a 19th century queen-sized burled walnut bed frame with matching dresser, gossamer lace curtains, an original oak trimmed mirror, fireplace, nice bath with double whirlpool , a definite feel of graceful times of long ago - less rushed, unhurried, peaceful!

The Gazebo Room has its own porch and entrance - very private! This original master bedroom now has a sitting room as well, a corner fireplace with antique oak mantle, stained glass windows, and a 19th century French armoire that conceals the electronics! A marble accented oversize whirlpool tub completes this luxurious setting. While we did not see the room, the guests staying there spoke with us for a few moments, and said it is wonderful! It was their second time back in as many months!

The Room at the Top! You can write an article about his room alone. 900 s.f. of space, a separate, private entrance, beautiful floral wallpapers, 1860's burled walnut bed, fireplace with 100-year-old cherry mantle with a whirlpool in front of it, and so many extras! It is loaded with antique lamps and period pieces, with a huge cherry pier mirror with fluted columns, huge peaked ceilings, Augusta's own sewing cabinets doors now hide the electronics and wet bar. This is a great, super honeymoon and romantic getaway suite without doubt! As you turn the stairway leading up, the railings are from an old jury box from the Door County Courthouse! A truly unique and wonderful suite!

The food!
A full, homemade breakfast is served beginning at 8:30 A.M. Homemade cookies, brownies and other treats are out for guests in the evening.

Open year round, the inn ranges in price from $84 to $220 per night (always check their website for current and accurate rates), and caters to adults (no kids, no pets). Try the Scofield House - we know you will enjoy it!
